LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The DeWitt Township Police Department is warning community members of a recent computer security program scam after an elderly resident was scammed out of thousands of dollars.

According to a Facebook post made by DeWitt Chater Township, the woman, a resident of DeWitt, reported she was scammed out of $9,500 after receiving an email from someone claiming to be her daughter.

When the victim opened the email, her computer froze, and a security alert popped up, asking her to call an 800 number.

The victim says she called the number and spoke to someone who told her she needed to purchase a new security program on her computer.

When the victim told the scammer she had already purchased a security program, the scammer said they would refund her the money so she could buy a new one.

The victim then shared her personal bank information with the scammer, allowing them to create a fake bank statement showing that they refunded the resident too much money.

The victim was then asked to go to her bank and wire the excess money to an account in Florida. She did and was defrauded out of the funds.
