On Tuesday, Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff received his sentencing in Franklin County court for his May 6, 2025 arrest. McGuff received a $565 fine and a 180-day license suspension for a physical control charge, according to court records.

McGuff was not in court for the decision on Tuesday morning, instead entering his guilty plea through his legal counsel, Richard Piatt. The plea was for a lesser charge than the initial operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OVI) charge given by police in Dublin, Ohio.

The original charge comes with a mandatory three days in jail or in a driver prevention program, plus a minimum $375 fine and a one-year license suspension. McGuff’s May arrest was the coach’s first offence, a likely reason for the agreed-upon lesser charge.

Dublin Police pulled McGuff over for driving erratically in his neighborhood after the 2024-25 season. Nobody was physically hurt in the incident, and authorities pulled McGuff over in his own driveway after McGuff swerved and ultimately ended his drive home partially parked in his own front yard. McGuff failed sobriety tests on the scene and later received a two-week suspension by the Ohio State athletic department, and treatment at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

Police body cam footage later showed McGuff sit in his car for an extended period of time before getting out of the vehicle and speaking with police on the scene. The footage itself shows the coach struggling to have a conversation with authorities, although he shared that he returned home after going out to dinner that evening.

Initially, the case was in Dublin Mayor’s Court until it moved to the Franklin County system on Nov. 12.
