A Tesla traveling the wrong way collided head-on with a dump truck in Scottsdale on Dec. 2, sending both drivers to the hospital, police said.

The crash occurred just before noon in a residential area near Cactus Road and 74th Street. Scottsdale officers restricted traffic around the large crash scene, according to the Scottsdale Police Department on X.

Officer Aaron Bolin, spokesperson for the Scottsdale Police Department, said a Tesla was heading east on Cactus Road when it veered left across the center median and into the westbound lanes, striking the dump truck.

Both the Tesla driver and the dump truck driver were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, according to Bolin.

Scottsdale police said impairment and speed did not appear to be factors, and investigators estimated the Tesla was traveling at the posted speed limit.

The Tesla driver was cited for driving left of the center median under Arizona Revised Statute 28-721(A) and for failing to control speed to avoid a collision under ARS 28-701(A), according to Bolin.

The Tesla’s driving mode at the time of the crash remained part of an active investigation, Bolin said.
